The different canals, trails and old shepherds’ paths there are on the Picos de Europa allow us to access and become familiar with the heart of this limestone giant that are the Picos de Europa in a different way.
In this case, we offer the traveler a different way to ascend to the upper station of the cable car of Fuente Dé. It is a path that surely requires more effort on the part of the traveler, but which also offers the satisfaction of traveling through one of the most amazing trails we will find in this area.
The trail begins at the car park, gradually gaining altitude. We will walk next to what was once a mining operation, where we will find remains of some stone walls still standing today, and we can peek at the entrance of some mine opening. The path winds its way along the hillside of the limestone wall to take us further little by little, until we pass right under the building at which the cable car cabins arrive.
Once we reach the upper part of the station, we will continue towards the Hotel Refugio de Aliva through a comfortable track. From there, we will continue our descent until we reach the Invernales de Igüedri. These winter animal shelters are still used today for livestock purposes. At this point, we will take a beautiful trail that will take us through a lush forest of beech trees most of the time, until we reach the route’s end point, where we will become aware of the spectacular route we will have completed.
